- Responding to Young People at High Risk: A School Focused Pilot

The project is piloting an outreach secondary consultation model in response to referrals to Austin CAMHS from identified Department of Education and Training Schools in the Whittlesea Network. For referrals which do not result in the offer of a crisis assessment, there will be a prompt alternative response of a secondary consultation in the first instance, with potential for a conjoint primary consultation when appropriate.

The pilot has been developed in response to feedback to the Austin CAMHS through the Service Improvement Initiative and the Trust Survey which indicated that there is a lack of consistency and good communication in the management of referrals to and feedback from the CAMHS. Both surveys also endorsed the practice of secondary consultation as valuable not only in assisting with the management of a particular client, but also in facilitating a better understanding and relationship with CAMHS for recipient agencies.

The pilot aims to develop a collaborative style of working, particularly in relation to:
· The role of secondary and primary consultation and how to use it effectively.
· The development of a school based and owned case management model.
· Use of a standard risk assessment definition and framework based initially on the RAMP Risk Assessment Tool developed through Austin CAMHS with funding from the Boroondara School focused youth Service.
· Engagement with appropriate local agencies and general practitioners regarding referral.

A reference group comprising CAMHS staff and referrers will be developed to guide and monitor the pilot and to consider the implications for ongoing service delivery.

The model is intended to complement and build on a whole school approach to mental health promotion including the Mind Matters, Health Promoting Schools and Gatehouse models.
